What are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are unstable molecules that
steal electrons from other
molecules and thereby cause damage to normal cells. The damage
they cause in the body is called oxidation, and it is the body-equivalent
to rust on a piece of tin.
Although oxygen is essential to
life, it is the source of most damaging free radicals. These
reactive compounds are created in the body during normal metabolic
functions or introduced from the environment.
Free radical damage "clog up" the
body, bringing about premature
aging, wrinkling and loosening of skin, and general loss of
vitality.
